Making time to listen, hear, record and connect artists from Figure3 with their current work and past inspirations.
I am interesting in unravelling the ‘..loops of creative activity..’
My intention with the Stairwell Conversations is to create a space where artists and visitors to the Figure 3 exhibition at BALTIC 39 can reflect on their earliest creative memories.

Christine Egan-Fowler with Ruairi Mc Guinness, we have prepared for each of the sessions by sitting together , comparing notes.
Ruairi has also taken part in The Stairwell Conversations; he is both a Sound Artist and Coffee Entrepreneur (Coolaboola) and in his Conversation, he spoke about the theme of building walls; sound walls, physical walls; making spaces from non spaces. In all the Conversations, themes have emerged linking creative practice and early influences, activities and of course key words.

Matt Copson and Rose Rowson spoke to me about their work, their passion for inventive collaboration and the theme of making work they loved being part of. Their ‘Magazine ‘ framework offers them the chance to collaborate via live feeds with artists across the globe and create paintings, drawings and show their own and others’ films as features. They transformed the Project Space and created an inspirational durational work over the five days. They agreed that making things and doing things over a long period of time was a feature of their early years. They said that it almost did not matter what activity a child does in their early years as long as the activity is prolonged and absorbing. They are absorbed in what happens during ‘time spent.’ I would love to work with them in the future.

Lizzie spoke of her love of making things and how she felt connected with her late Mum when she is absorbed in creative work. She has been in touch since the Conversation and has recalled many rich memories.

Ruairi Mc Guinness is an inspirational presence. He is calm and as a Sound Artist often listens not only to words said but is aware of the ambient sounds. His recordings are rich in meaning but also have caught the acoustics of the space. I am interested in the role of the listener.
