BALTIC offers many opportunities for our young people to meet and talk to artists and designers. Working with artists and creative business people is important for understanding the skills we need to have in today’s climate and to foster confidence in both students and teachers.

On this Creative Careers Day my students were particularly impressed by Sarah Bagshaw’s enthusiasm and her entrepreneurial approach.

Sarah was a real inspiration; her workshop took us through a series of investigative processes, simple materials, a restricted palette.

Sarah runs her own creative business and this excited students too. Her market is global.

“I use Photoshop in an experimental manner and love ‘happy accidents’. I’m influenced by a huge range of artists and designers working across many disciplines …”

The sessions at BALTIC bring together students and teachers from across the region and always have a great range of speakers and creatives who are willing to speak to the students on a one to one. Vicky Sturrs organises the events and is always innovative and welcoming. She always encourages students to bring portfolios and is always open to questions and to adapt the sessions offered in order to meet our changing needs. We feature the sessions in student portfolios and the chance to meet with and talk to people working in creative fields is a precious offer for our young people.

The students worked in a lovely space at BALTIC on Floor One. The space was set up like an adult conference and the students really appreciated being treated as adults and as artists. The work they did in the session was also inspiring and they were encouraged to post their responses on Sarah’s website after doing a series of Photoshop manipulations.
