The Organisational Perspective
5th-27th September 2016
BALTIC Centre for Contemporary Art. Gateshead.UK
An exploration of the connections between remembering and the senses, performance and painting, live and the archived.
The installation offers opportunities to recall early memories of processing the things we see, sense, taste, smell and hear, with large scale paintings made using a dynamic mix of materials: Brasso, calamine lotion and Windowlene – products vividly evoking the artist’s childhood.
A changing display of photographs, film, writing, and a relaxing viewing space all invite visitors to consider their own experiences of memory and creativity.
The exhibition is the culmination of The Artworks Fellowship – The Organisational Perspective.

‘Newcastle artist and teacher sees work go on show at BALTIC’
Newcastle artist and teacher Christine Egan-Fowler will see her work go on show at BALTIC Centre for Contemporary Art as the culmination of a year-long fellowship which helps artists to develop their careers.
Christine, who works as an artist and teaches Art at Newcastle’s Royal Grammar School, was awarded The Artworks Fellowship in October 2015 and has created an exhibition for BALTIC’s Quay Gallery called Playing the Waiting Game, on show from 5 September until 27 September 2016.
Christine explained: “The last year has been a really rich experience for me and has taught me to be brave and see myself as an artist in my own right.
“I’ve collaborated with other artists to create the pieces which people will see on show at BALTIC and the exhibition really brings together everything I’ve learnt and experienced during the year.”
Christine has created a series of paintings, sound recordings, photographs, film and performances which all explore early experiences of memory and creativity. The paintings are made with materials including calamine lotion, Brasso and Windowlene, which evoke the artist’s memories of 1970s childhood.
The ArtWorks Fellowship is funded by The Paul Hamlyn Foundation. Three UK artists, each paired with an arts organisation, were selected by Artworks London to be awarded the fellowship.
Christine added: “My application for the fellowship was really inspired by seeing my 17 year old daughter Hannah complete a work experience placement at Fenwick department store in Newcastle. She got so much out of it and it made me realise that opportunities to learn and develop like this are important for adults too.
A series of pop-up events and performances will take place every Saturday in September, as part of Christine’s installation.
Playing the Waiting Game builds on a previous body of work called Memory Folds which Christine produced as the recipient of the 2013 BALTIC Artist Teacher Award and which was also shown in BALTIC’s Quay Gallery.
